3 Midterm Essay From one of the assigned Time/Newsweek magazine articles, write an essay response to the article. Approach is up to you. You may write about: do you agree or disagree Pathos, logos, ethos aspects how it represents the human condition does the writer accomplish his or her goal what is the presumed theme of the writing Your notes on the article & your essay determine your grade.

4 ENC 1101 Writing Workshop Purpose:
_ to move poor writers up to college levels _ to create critical thinkers _ to foster writing confidence

5 Formatting Each formal writing must have: _ A beginning
introduces & makes a claim which is the thesis _ A middle substantiates the claim; has support and elaboration of ideas _ An end wraps up ideas used in the body; usually restates the ideas of the beginning. This is usually broken down into 5 indented paragraphs. It could be more; rarely, less. Formatting

6 What’s in each Paragraph?
{See Writer’s Checklist} Introduction – _attention grabber (mature) _generalities _thesis (poignant stance) 3+ Body Paragraphs – * start with topic sentences (1 per body paragraph) * at least 2 items of claim + support + elaboration * advanced vocabulary & stock language & L/D’s * variety of sentences & phrases & transitions * citation (research papers) * backing up your thesis (check in with your thesis) End – new way of stating thesis at least one poignant claim lasting mature impression on readers What’s in each Paragraph?

7 Even though a lot would argue that writing is a creative process, it most definitely has scientific elements. It is a science. _ always indent new ideas _ give others credit (research especially) _ use correct punctuation: “ “. ! ( ) , ‘ ; - : _ support what you claim _ utilize spelling rules _ unless asked, avoid using personal pronouns – I, me, my _ follow through with your ideas _ if literature, write in the present tense _ (see others you copied last week) Writing has Rules!

9 aDDITONALS! Introductions & Good attention grabbers:
_ questions _ idiomatic expressions _ name of work or author/poet/writer _ stock language _ types of phrases _no exclamations, interjections, and watch for anecdotes! Thesis: may be one statement, question, or 3 items. Conclusions: _ more than a sentence _ avoid “that is why” “in conclusion” _ leave readers with something to ponder, feel, or do (Logos, Pathos, Ethos). I didn’t know that! aDDITONALS! In today’s world, diverse situations call for diverse forms of communication. Culture (ours & theirs), diction, tone, and vocabulary all tend to influence writing. These should always be considered when we write.
