1 Widgets translations Luxembourg 23 & 24/05/2013
Marc Vanderperren, ESTAT.B6

2 Widgets architecture 4a

3 Widgets translations 4a Table titles, subtitles and short descriptions are stored and managed in system TMT (EN, DE, FR). Code lists are stored and managed in Eurobase (EN, DE, FR). Allowing 23 official languages would require changing each of those two systems where data are stored and managed (TMT, refcl) -> would only be used for very few items. TMT & Eurobase are currently internal Eurostat systems, with no current possibility to open these for external users (NSIs)

4 Widgets translations – data volumes
Code lists in Eurobase 500 Code lists used for widgets 8 = 1.6 % Items in code lists in Eurobase Items used for widgets 29 = 0.02 % Titles, subtitles and short descriptions in TMT (= predefined tables) 1200 Titles, subtitles and short descriptions used for widgets 18 = 1.5%

5 Widgets translations - issues
Workload Resources and knowledge needed to manage the additional languages Currently few titles and code lists concerned – but any additional or modified table supported by the widgets will increase the maintenance work Process Ensuring parallel updates of labels in up to 23 languages Internal organisational issues Changes to IT systems (development, testing, release cycle) -> impact on schedule

6 Widgets translations – proposed solution
Proposal: translate only headline (indicator name & short description) 2 options Replace this in the WTG Hide the EN / DE / FR in the WTG, perform the translation at the level of the site embedding the widget

7 Widgets translations – roundtable
