1 In your Science Starter section COPY and answer the questions below:
What are the steps of the scientific method? How do these steps relate to one another?

2 Steps of the Scientific Method

3 The Scientific Method is a series of steps that are used to investigate a natural occurrence.

4 Scientist use their 5 senses to make observations about the world.
The five senses are: 1 2 3 4 5

5 Do you know the order? Get out your bag of scientific method pieces.
Organize all your pieces so they are face up. In pairs, put the pieces in the order you think the scientific method occurs.

6 Lets take a closer look at these steps and the terminology, make corrections to your scientific order as we discuss the order of the scientific method

7 Steps of the Scientific Method
1. Observation: Make observations using your 5 senses.

8 Steps of the Scientific Method
2. Problem/Question: Develop a question or problem that can be solved through experimentation.

9 Do you remember the next step?

10 Steps of the Scientific Method
3. Research – investigating a topic of interest to gain background knowledge

11 Steps of the Scientific Method
4. Formulate a Hypothesis: Predict a possible answer to the problem or question. Example: If soil temperatures rise, then plant growth will increase.

12 Steps of the Scientific Method
5. Experiment and collect data: Develop and follow a procedure. Include a detailed materials list. The outcome must be measurable. (quantifiable). Include tables, graphs, and photographs.

13 Steps of the Scientific Method
6. Analyze Results and draw a conclusion: Modify the procedure if needed. Confirm the results by retesting. Include a statement that accepts or rejects the hypothesis. Make recommendations for further study and possible improvements to the procedure.

14 Formulate a Hypothesis Experiment & Collect data
Scientific Method Observation Problem or question Research Formulate a Hypothesis Experiment & Collect data Analyze data and draw conclusions

15 Think you can name all six steps?
Collect and Analyze Results Formulate a Hypothesis Communicate the Results Observation/Research Problem/Question Experiment Conclusion

16 In your SISN under our note template:
Complete a flow map of the correct order of the all six steps in the scientific method.

17 Let’s put our knowledge of the Scientific Method to a realistic example that includes some of the terms you’ll be needing to use and understand.

18 John watches his grandmother bake bread
John watches his grandmother bake bread. He ask his grandmother what makes the bread rise. She explains that yeast releases a gas as it feeds on sugar.

19 John wonders if the amount of sugar used in the recipe will affect the size of the bread loaf?

20 He keeps all of his information on this topic in a journal.
John researches the areas of baking and fermentation and tries to come up with a way to test his question. He keeps all of his information on this topic in a journal.

21 “If more sugar is added, then the bread will rise higher.”
After talking with his teacher and conducting further research, he comes up with a hypothesis. “If more sugar is added, then the bread will rise higher.”

22 John talks with his teacher and she gives him a Experimental Design Diagram to help him set up his investigation.

23

24 John tests various amounts of sugar in his bread and makes notes about what happens! An example of his notes are: How high each loaf of bread rises.

25 John looks back at his data and draws conclusions based off of his data about the rising level of bread.

26 Observe your world and come up with a question to answer using the Scientific Method!

27 In the third section of your SISN, COPY and answer the questions below:
