2 16.1 Spontaneous Processes & Entropy
Fast or slow Occur without outside interventions Thermodynamics test the direction in which a process will occur but nothing about the speed of the process Considers only the initial and final states Entropy (S) A measure of randomness or disorder Driving force for a spontaneous process is an increase in the entropy of the system A thermodynamic function that describes the number of arrangements that are available to a system existing in a given state Nature spontaneously proceeds toward the states that have the highest probabilities of existing

3 Positional probability
Depends on the number of configurations in space (positional microstates) that yield a particular state Positional entropy increases in going from solid to liquid to gas. The entropy change associated with the mixing of two pure substances is expected to be positive due to the increase in volume available. Increase in positional entropy associated with mixing favors the formation of solutions.
