Should We build a new recycling site in Lewes?
Students should be given time to consider their opinion about whether they would like a new recycling centre down the road in Lewes They should then pin their name to an opinion line set up across the classroom to show what their opinion is Volunteers could explain why they have put their opinion at various places Students should work in pairs to sort the cards into 2 piles: those that support the recycling site and those that don’t. If necessary go through as a class Students to consider if their ideas have changed and if they want they can move their names on the opinion line They could then look at the opinions of other people in the local area, using the slides or discussion cards. Depending on the group they could write their opinion down in their books, trying to give a balanced argument, alternatively they could write opinions pretending to be various local people or you could use the worksheet for students to read the opinions and write their own on the worksheet.

Should We build a new recycling site in Lewes?
We must recycle more to conserve the earth’s resources The site might be quite noisy The council is under pressure to meet government recycling targets It will cost a lot of money to build the new site A local depot will make it easier to recycle The site could mean extra lorries on the roads The council will not have to pay to put as much rubbish into landfill sites The landfill sites in this area are getting full Less fuel will be used to transport the materials if the dept is nearer The site might smell The site can make money from selling recycled aluminum cans There are new laws that make sure the council recycles a good % of its waste The land for the new site is waste land The new site will create jobs for local people If more local people have jobs then they will spend more money in the local shops Recycling often costs less than making something from scratch

If they build this new site I am hoping to get a job there as I have the right qualifications”. Name: John Battle - the local councillor for this area. “The government has made laws that say we have to recycle your rubbish. If we don’t recycle enough then the council will get fined and we won’t have as much money to spend on schools and hospitals.” Name: Claire Warmley – lives in Lewes next to the proposed recycling site “I really don’t want them to build this site – it will be really noisy and smelly and there will be loads of lorries going past my house all the time!” Name: Paula Wright - lives next to a landfill site where a lot of our rubbish gets sent “We can’t possibly keep putting rubbish into land fill sites so we need more recycling centres. It is also much better for the environment if we can recycle as it stops materials getting wasted.”
