Learners offer subject combinations, which have a high failure rate as a combination. Poor performance in Afrikaans Home Language, Accounting, Business Studies, History and Agricultural Sciences compared to 2016. Increase in number of novice teachers across all subjects, especially high enrolment subjects. Teachers teaching subjects they are not qualified / underqualified in (including educators with Primary School qualifications) High number of migrant teachers resulting in high percentage of absenteeism which, subsequently, impacts negatively on both curriculum and school-based assessment coverage. Huge number of progressed learners and child-headed homes resulting in poor learner attendance. Provincial Subject Co-ordinator and District Subject Advisor vacancies. High degree of “teaching to the test” and encouraging of rote-learning. Inflated school-based assessment, viz. substandard assessment tasks and lenient marking. 30 November 2018
