Introduce definite integral notation and calculator use. Introduce Fundamental Theorem of Calculus Problems 2 and 3 can be assigned as homework then the next day have the students discuss with each other in a group then have group presentations.

Caren rides her bicycle along a straight road from home to school, starting at home at time t = 0 minutes and arriving at school at time t = 12 minutes. During the time interval 0β€π‘β€12 minutes, her velocity π£ π‘ , in miles per minute, is modeled by the piecewise-linear function whose graph is shown above.

Write a story about Carenβs 12-minute bicycle ride to school based on the graph of Carenβs velocity given above. Answers will vary. Allow several students to read their story. Be sure they include how her trip during 0β€π‘β€2 and during 2β€π‘β€4 differ. How is the trop on these two intervals the same? What is happening during 4β€π‘β€5? When is she accelerating? When is she riding at a constant velocity?

Shortly after leaving home, Caren realizes she left her calculus book at home, and she returns home to get it. At what time does she turn around to go back home? Give a reason for your answer. Caren turns around after riding for 2 minutes, π‘=2. Her velocity is positive for the first 2 minutes, 0<π‘<2. This means she is riding away from home because her distance from home (displacement) is increasing. From 2<π‘<4, her velocity is negative so she is riding back home, her distance from home (displacement) is decreasing.
