4 What Types of Trial Courts Exist?
CRIMINAL COURT infraction, misdemeanor and felonies PROBATE COURT estates, trusts, guardianship of minors, and conservatorship of adults JUVINILE COURT child abuse, neglect, and juvenile delinquency SMALL CLAIMS COURT individuals representing themselves, resolve disputes quickly and inexpensively in an informal setting (no lawyers) CIVIL COURT money, title or possession of real property, enforcing a contract, protecting one's civil rights

5 COURTROOM LAYOUT

6 JUDGE ($125k per year) A lead official who presides over a court of law

7 PLAINTIFF (Counsel) The party who initiates a lawsuit or accuses a party of a crime Demands damages, performance, and/or court determination of rights

8 DEFENDANT (Counsel) The party sued in a civil lawsuit or the party charged with a crime in a criminal prosecution.

9 BAILIFF (40k/year) Court officer responsible for keeping order in the court

10 COURT CLERK (45k/year) The assistant to the judge who swears in witnesses and supervises the exhibits during the trial

11 COURT REPORTER (45k/year)
Witnesses and reports on what is said at a trial. Makes notes during the proceeding, then produces a full transcript of what was said from these notes.

12 COURT INTERPRETER ($17.10/hour 35k/year)
Help people appearing in court who are unable or unwilling to communicate in English.
