Technical or content-specific vocabulary. A series of letters put at the end of a word that change its meaning. The study of the origin of words (from which cultures them come). The study of how meaningless sounds form meaningful words. A form of a word around which other words are formed.

2 Now! Write an ode (love poem) to someone or something using at least 7 of your words. Use at least one prefix, one suffix, and one root word. The length does not matter as long as you use the words correctly and it rhymes. Be ready to share your poem with the class.

3 Let’s Review Highlighting and Annotation
Read “The Last Night of the World,” and highlight the following in two different colors: References to dreams and/or plans References to ordinary, household things and activities In addition, use your purposeful annotations as you read!

4 Let’s Discuss Select your two most important pieces of text for each of your highlighting colors and let’s talk about what it reveals about the story on the whole.

5 Let’s Add Another Dimension
Take a third color of highlighter OR underline references to family. Let’s see how this changes the dynamic and our understanding.

6 Now! With your corner partner, review all three colors of highlighting (along with your annotations) and try to determine what Bradbury is trying to say about the intersection of “everyday, ordinary things,” “dreams and plans,” and “family.” Take 5 minutes and then let’s discuss your findings!

7 Let’s Practice Retelling!
Fill out the graphic organizer based on the story and our purposeful annotations and highlighting. After this, we will discuss what you put, and then you will try to retell it in fewer than two paragraphs.

8 Homework Continue to review your Decoding Words. They will be the foundation for our Bellringer tomorrow! Also, don’t forget that your decoding quiz is on Monday. Also, Molly and Kailey, don’t forget that your presentations will be next Wednesday!
