What to expect Every act, we will get into groups to study a select topic of the following: A) Characters/relationships B) Theme/Tone C) Literary Devices D) Plot Development E) Dramatic Devices Every act, you will rotate to a different topic to analyze in the play. For example: Act 1 : Characters / Relationships Act 2: Theme/Tone And so on..

How it works Part 1: Meet with small groups (assigned to you)
Part 2: Meet with Topic groups (other classmates with the same topic) Part 3: Meet in Jigsaw * 1-2 people from each topic in a group Part 4: Go back to small groups and reflect on Jigsaw meeting

Characters/Relationships:
Topics covered Characters/Relationships: Identify the different relationships presented. Do the relationships change during the scenes? How? What and who causes the change? Does anyone benefit from the change? How? Does the relationship matter to the development of the play? Why? Why not? List description of characters Character strengths/weaknesses Character motivation General impression of character as a person *(as viewed in the novel)

Topics Covered Theme/Tone
What is the overall theme of the act? * Give theme and explain in detail why with text evidence Are there any mini themes that move the play along? *Example: Loss; a quote about the death of a loved one What is the tone of the scene(s)? Provide a tone and then explain why with text evidence * Example: Hatred; “quote” from text

Topics covered Literary Devices
For this topic, read through the act and find lines that fit the literary device and describe why and the purpose for it. Cite the lines you pick. Foreshadowing: Event that hint things to come Metaphor Comparing two like things without using like or as Simile Comparing two like things using like or as Dramatic Irony When the reader knows something the characters don’t Symbolism Item represents something other than its original meaning Imagery Painting a picture with words Personification Giving human characteristics to inanimate objects Hyperbole Figure of speech where truth is exaggerated for emphasis/humor

In this topic, fill in the points of a plot with events from the act. Show how the play is developing. *Provide cited text evidence to prove your claim for the event placement INSERT PLOT DIAGRAM IMAGE

Topic Coverage Dramatic Devices
Theater has terms that are used in plays. Find the following and cite text evidence. *Explain the purpose of using these conventions in the scene. Soliloquy Character expresses feelings/ thoughts alone on stage Monologue A long speech by one actor that addresses an audience Aside Character dialogue spoken but not meant to be heard by others Comic Relief Humorous break in a drama Foil Demonstrates qualities that contrast another character; meant to highlight opposite traits of the other character. Tragic Flaw A weakness or limitation of character, resulting in the fall of them.
