It is our choice whether or not we wish to serve a king whose kingship is not based on human power, but on loving and serving others. We are nearing the end of the Catholic liturgical year, which is the cycle of seasons in the Roman Catholic Church. The Church year begins with Advent, the season of awaiting Christ’s coming, and ends with the final Saturday of Ordinary time. (November 25th this calendar year). Ordinary Time is the age we live in now, which is the time between the age of the Apostles and the age of Christ’s second and final coming for which we are ever preparing. That's why there's nothing "ordinary" about Ordinary Time. The final Sunday in Ordinary Time is the Feast of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe (also known as Christ the King) - today. The start of the new liturgical year, beginning with the first Sunday of Advent on December 3rd, also marks the transition from one lectionary cycle (A, B, or C) to the next. So we now have a three-year cycle of readings built around readings from the three synoptic Gospels—Matthew, Mark, and Luke. On December 3rd, we will start Liturgical Year B (Gospel of Mark) for Sunday Masses.
