Not many of his plays survive, but the ones that do were his later ones. They were marked by tragedy and sorrow because Athens was suffering much. This play, therefore, is not a happy one and reflects the actual situation taking place at the time.

8 Key Literary Devices Dramatic Irony Verbal Irony Tragedy:
A serious drama featuring a main character, often of noble birth, who strives to achieve something and is ultimately defeated. Defeat may be caused by forces beyond his/her control. Main character’s downfall is due to an inborn character flaw or weakness (tragic flaw). Tragic hero gains new self-knowledge or wisdom.
