1 A windowless room contains three identical ceiling rights, each containing an identical light bulb. Each light is connected to one of three switches outside of the room. Each bulb is switched off at present. You are outside the room, and the door is closed. You have one, and only one, opportunity to flip any of the external switches. After this, you can go into the room and look at the lights, but you may not touch the switches again. How can you tell which switch goes to which light?

2 Tick of the following in your History Planner

3 By the end of this lesson, everybody will be able to…
Describe the chronology leading up until Hitler becoming Chancellor in 1933 Explain the different reasons why Hitler was able to become Chancellor Decide the main reason why Hitler was able to become Chancellor

4 How Hitler Became Chancellor
Complete a flow diagram from July Election of 1932 to the Enabling Act (24th March 1933) Explain each step and how it links to the next Include the following (I’ve deliberately not put them in the right order): The Enabling Act Hitler appointed Chancellor Goebbels takes control of the media Reichstag Fire Reichstag election of July 1932 Kurt von Schleicher made Chancellor Von Papen convinces Hindenburg that Hitler can be controlled Reichstag elections March Nazis with support of Nationalist Party have a majority

5 How Hitler Became Chancellor
Reichstag election of July 1932 Nazi’s become largest single party (NOT overall majority) with 230/608 seats This allows Hitler to ask Hindenburg if he can become Chancellor, but Hindenburg refuses Von Papen carries on as Chancellor, with a lack of support (Hindenburg uses Article 48) Von Papen calls an election for November 1932 on the basis of his lack of support Nazi’s are still the largest party but lost their majority (funding is low, Hitler contemplates suicide) Kurt von Schleicher made Chancellor He is Von Papen’s rival However, he is forced to resign because he too had a lack of support (it was clear that the Weimar system was crumbling) Von Papen convinces Hindenburg that Hitler can be controlled Hitler appointed Chancellor Von Papen is made Vice Chancellor Hitler calls for an election… Add detail on how each leads to the other tomorrow.

6 How Hitler Became Chancellor
Reichstag Fire 27th February the Reichstag burns down… Hitler blames the Communists (part of a wider uprising) Van De Lubbe (Dutch Communist) confesses Hitler uses special emergency powers to arrest Communists and break up their meetings Reichstag elections March Nazis with support of Nationalist Party have a majority Used to SA and SS to intimidate the Reichstag into passing… The Enabling Act Hitler can make laws without the support of the Reichstag Only SPD vote against passing the Enabling Act Catholics support on the grounds they will still be able to control Catholic Schools Goebbels takes control of the media Add detail on how each leads to the other tomorrow.

7 Removal of Opposition: For each one explain why they would help remove opposition
Communists arrested following the Reichstag Fire Goebbels took control of all media Enabling Act SPD party banned Civil Service, law courts and education all purged of Nazi opponents Trade Unions banned Law Against Formation of New Parties, Germany become a one-party state Concordat (agreement) between state and Catholic Church
