1 Warm Up 10/21 Just answer this one question today: what is the difference between editing and revising?

2 Learning Targets To improve upon our rough drafts by reading over them with fresh eyes in order to identify any problems, both major and minor, that may need attention before submission.

3 Guided Revision Use the grading scale, and these next few slides, to guide the revision of your essay.

4 Revision for Ideas and Content (50% of your grade on this essay)
Do these phrases describe your essay? Go through each paragraph, using these questions to guide your revision: Exceptionally focused (is your thesis evident throughout your essay? Is everything you wrote based on it?) Engaging with specific, credible, relevant supporting detail (are your quotes relevant? If so, is their relevance clear, or do you need to explain more?) Original & insightful commentary (is your commentary from your own mind? Does it help to prove your thesis? If so, is that clearly shown?) Solid choices for evidence are supported with ample context (do you use context to introduce/explain each quote?) Answers all of reader’s questions (when you finish reading each paragraph, are you left with any questions?).

5 Revision for Organization
Look over how your essay is organized. Then, use this criteria to reorganize, if necessary. Order, presentation, and internal structure of piece are clear and logical (would it make more sense if the piece were reorganized?). Uses appropriate & varied transitions and syntax to link major sections of the text (Do you use necessary and varied transitions between your points?) Cohesive, with clear relationships among complex ideas and concepts (does it all make sense together? If not, what do you need to add, or, how would you reorganize it?)

6 Revision for Voice Style is formal, when appropriate (are there any areas where your writing is too informal?) tone maintains objectivity throughout (is your voice objective, or is your opinion too clearly expressed?) Voice is expressive, engaging and sincere and demonstrates a strong sense of audience (does your writing suit its audience? Does it feel sincere?)

7 Revision for Word Choice
Vocabulary is active, powerful and engaging, creating vivid imagery (is there anything that needs to be added to make your language stronger/more vivid?) words convey intended message in a precise, interesting, and natural way (does your writing feel forced, or does it read naturally?)

8 Revision for Sentence Fluency
Sentences have flow, rhythm, and cadence (do they flow? Do they sound choppy?) Sentence structure enhances meaning; engages and moves reader from beginning to end in fluid fashion (do they flow? Do they sound choppy?) Varied sentence beginnings add interest and energy (are the sentence beginnings varied?)

9 Editing - Conventions Look over your writing to try to catch spelling/grammatical issues (you may have a friend look over your work if you would like). Grammar/usage is correct and contributes to clarity and style; Uses standard writing conventions effectively; punctuation and spelling are correct and enhance readability; errors are few and only minor.
