All About Me I am both a young, full-time student at Napa Valley College & employee at Ca’ Momi. I live in a household of seven including myself. I cook at home, I commute to work and school, I enjoy splurging money, & I go out to eat very frequently. What I believe is that Earth’s resources will be available for me for a while so I can continue living the lifestyle I am currently living. If it makes my case any better I do recycle often...
4
Individuals Use of Natural Resources
I take the bus, get rides, or use my very own hind legs I have a beloved dog (requires a lot of maintenance) Shower once everyday Brush my teeth & wash my face twice a day There is no constant, I either eat once a day or three or four times a day, there is no in between (go out to eat like there is no tomorrow)
5
Carbon Footprint Contribution
For a Household of 7 Current Annual Estimated CO2 Emissions (lbs): 35,923 Total My Own Greenhouse Gas Emissions: 7.9 tons of CO2 (15800 lbs) U.S. Average: 85,491 (lbs) From 9/01 to 11/02 Water Use: 12,000 gallons gallons per person in household
6
Napa 2005 Emissions (metric tons of CO2 equivalents): 1,200,281 Total Commercial & Industrial - 226,661 Residential - 196,350 Transportation - 636,724 Agriculture & Farming - 33,046 Industrial - 49,675 Per Capita Emissions: 8.95 Population: 134,326 Public Water Supply Total Population Served (in thousands):
7
California CO2 Emissions from Fossil Fuel Combustion - Million Metric Tons 2013: Total Commercial Industrial Residential Transportation Electric Power Biocapacity: 1.9 global acres per capita Ecological Footprint: 16.5 global acres per capita Each Californian uses an average of about 181 gallons of water per day, 38 billion gallons per day by California as a whole. 74% of all FRESHwater withdrawals is for Irrigation
8
United States CO2 Emissions from Fossil Fuel Combustion - Million Metric Tons 2013: Total Commercial Industrial Residential Transportation Electric Power Agriculture Ecological Footprint: 9.4 Hectares per person Total freshwater & saline-water withdrawals for 2010: 355 billion gallons per day
9
Worldwide Humanity's Footprint by the Numbers:
2.6 global hectares - Average Ecological Footprint per person worldwide 1.5 years - amount of time it takes the planet to regenerate humanity’s Footprint 50 percent The amount by which humanity’s Footprint exceeds the planet's regenerative capacity 1.5 Earth’s - number of planets we would need to regenerate humanity’s current demand on the planet 3.9 Earth’s - number of planets we would need if everyone lived like average Americans
10
Comparisons My Own Greenhouse Gas Emissions: 7.9 tons of CO2
U.S. Average Person: 27 tons of CO2 World Average per Person: 5.5 tons of CO2 Napa’s Per Capita Emissions: 8.95
11
Changes That Should Be We should encourage others to be aware of their footprint. We should make our best efforts to reduce carbon emissions → buying energy efficient products, making better traveling decisions We should use our consumer power → Look for eco labels or environmentally friendly items Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
12
Proposal For Personal Change
I will be more conscious of my decisions: The way I travel What I purchase, in context to it being eco friendly I will reduce how wasteful I am I need not to treat our resources as if it is present in great abundance
13
Conclusion → Carbon Emissions make up most of the greenhouse gas that are emitted into our atmosphere because of our unconscious decisions. → We can reduce our carbon footprint with awareness, reducing our carbon emissions, using our consumer power, & reducing, reusing, & recycling.
