2 What is a Wetland? An area of land that is covered by water for at least part of the year. Identified by the types of plants that grow in it.

3 Three Types of Wetlands
Swamp – Most common plants are trees and shrubs Usually named by the dominant type of tree

4 Maple Swamp

5 Cypress Swamp

6 Marsh – Wetlands made up mostly of grasses
They often form on floodplains of rivers or at the edges of some lakes

7 Coastal Marsh

8 Bog – Formed from a depression in the land left over from a glacier.
No water feeding or draining the bog The only source of water is moisture from rain Since no water drains, dead plants build up and sink to the bottom. This material is called peat

9 Wetland Animals
