1 What comes once in a minute, twice in a moment, and never in a thousand years?
Riddle answer: the letter M

2 By the end of this lesson, everybody will be able to…
Recall key events across the reigns of Edward and Mary Explain how these events show change/continuity over time Evaluate the significance of events in relation to the 6 key questions

3 Mid Tudor Crisis Whitney Jones and other Historians have argued that in the middle of the Tudor period there was a ‘crisis’ in which the monarchy became weak, there was a crisis in government (factionalism and weak government), increasing socio- economic problems, rebellion and religious upheaval) Most concentrate on the reigns of Edward and Mary but the crisis can be seen to extend from the latter years of Henry VIII’s reign through the early stages of Elizabeth’s reign. The arguments centres around the comparative strength of the early Monarch’s Henry VII and Henry VIII and strength of Elizabeth compared to the seeming weakness of Edward (child) and Mary (married woman). They point to the rebellions, economic problems and failures in foreign policy along with strong influences over Edward and Mary. Many historians dismiss the idea of crisis and point to bigger rebellions outside this period and achievements of Edward and Mary’s governments along with the lack of evidence that the Tudor dynasty was in genuine peril during this period.

4 Purpose of the next two lessons (1)
The Tudor unit is a breadth unit. In total the unit covers 118 years of history. (America covers 32…) The purpose of this unit, is to test whether you can understand how England changed/stayed the same over this time period. The unit offers 6 different ways of assessing change/continuity over this time period, these are the 6 key questions! The questions in your exam will cover NO LESS than 20 years… Edward reigns for 6 years, and Mary for 5 years (11 in total). This means Edward and Mary will always be asked in the same question – with either Henry or Elizabeth added on to meet the 20 year requirement.

5 Purpose of the next two lessons (2)
The purpose of these next two lessons is to create a timeline that contains all the key events in Edward and Mary’s reign. This means that after these two lessons, we can start looking at change and continuity across their reigns in relations to the key questions.

6 Timeline Activity 1 You will be given 6 events from the timeline. You will see that there is already a brief description of the event, and where the event is covered in the textbook. Read up on your event! Complete the tasks outlined at the top of the timeline worksheet

7 Homework Do further research and produce a factsheet/ hand-out on your two events Print enough for everyone in the class (18) Bring to next lesson

8 Timeline Activity 2 You should now have a timeline colour-coded and with comments in each box that refer to the concept of change and continuity. You will now be given one of the 6 key questions. Your job is to draw together the events that relate to your question, and write one paragraph that summarises what happens over the reign of Edward and Mary. You should refer to at least 3 events in your paragraph.

9 Flipped Learning Consolidation of HVII and HVIII in relation to power of the monarchy key question Bring answers to the following to the next Tudor lesson Produce bullet points of why the power of the monarchy as low at the start of Henry VII’s reign Give detailed examples (at least three) of how Henry VII increased the Power of the Monarchy What challenges to the power of the Monarchy were there under Henry VIII? How did Henry VIII extend the power of the Monarchy?
