1 Session 4 Conclusions & Recommendations
Content Discovery, Presentation and Protection Session Chair: Ralph W. Brown Senior VP, Broadband Access, CableLabs® 12/1/2018

2 Presentations in Session 4
MPPA Views on Secure Home Networking: Mr J. Williams, MPPA, US Finding A/V Content on the Home Network: UPnP/DHWG: Mr G. Stone, Sony Electronics Inc Digital Content Watermarking: Mr S. Sakazawa, KDDI, Japan Advanced Content Distribution Trial 2003 in Japan: Mr T. Hirose, NTT, East Japan 12/1/2018

3 Highlights from Presentation 1 “MPPA Views on Secure Home Networking”
Interested in “true” interoperability, including content protection mechanisms that secure content usage rights A home network must securely manage content usage rights Compares and contrasts traditional content protection mechanisms with the “Broadband Enabled World” Summarizes threats, requirements, and usage rights necessary for securing content on the home network Reviews several forums engaged in establishing content protection systems 12/1/2018

4 Highlights from Presentation 2 “Finding A/V Content on the Home Network: UPnP/DHWG”
Overview of Digital Home Working Group (DHWG) Summary of DHWG Approach: Deliver design guidelines based on open standards Provide a common baseline of media formats Accelerate market acceptance through compliance and verification testing Review of DHWG Use Case Scenarios: Digital Home Player (DHP) as User Interaction Endpoint Digital Home Server (DHS) as User Interaction Endpoint Digital Home Controller (DHC) as User Interaction Endpoint 12/1/2018

5 Highlights from Presentation 3 “Digital Contents Watermarking”
Introduction of watermarking as a piracy counter measure Summary of watermarking requirements Presentation of two typical watermarking techniques Spread spectrum DCT coefficients quantization Review of typical attacks on watermarking Reducing channel capacity De-synchronization Oracle attack (using watermark detector) Details need for a robust watermarking technology 12/1/2018

6 Highlights from Presentation 4 “Advanced Content Distribution Trial 2003 in Japan”
Overview of a Ministry of Public Management, Home Affairs, Post and Telecommunications (MPHPT) sponsored trial involving 10 Major Japanese broadcasters, carriers, and vendors Trial was made up of three component projects: Clearance system of copyrights Broadband content distribution system Content distribution in the educational field Trial demonstrated: HDTV content multi-transmission via both 64-QAM and IP Various user navigation models using various forms of metadata Secured content distribution by RMPI 12/1/2018

7 Overview of issues in the session
Interoperability a several levels is very important Content interoperability for content protection Interoperability of consumer devices through open and fair standards Content protection is very important Through active measures that insure content usage rights are respected Through passive measures, such as watermarking Demonstration of content distribution over QAM or IP through MPHPT trial 12/1/2018

8 Recommendations Open standards are clearly necessary to support interoperability and broader adoption of home networks ITU-T Recommendations J.190, J.191, and J.192 provide the basis for a secure, managed home network which is necessary to provide advanced multimedia services throughout the home Digital Home Working Group (DHWG) is developing guidelines for interoperability These recommendations do not yet address the issues of content protection A requirements document for Digital Rights Management (J.DRM) has been submitted to ITU and approved for progression Continued work on J.DRM in ITU SG9 is recommended 12/1/2018

9 Follow-up actions Establish a liaison relationship between ITU SG-9 and both the Universal Plug-and-Play (UPnP) Forum and the Digital Home Working Group (DHWG) Adoption of J.DRM requirements document by ITU SG-9 Further work in developing specifications based on the J.DRM requirements 12/1/2018

10 Conclusion The ITU-T Workshop on Home Networking and Home Services has been very productive in highlighting key issues for standardization The exchange of ideas and perspectives from around the globe has expanded our scope of thinking There are a large number of areas of standardization that can be pursued The Home Networking and Home Services Workshop has clearly met its objectives: Promotion of developing international standardization on Home Network Study possible and effective scenarios toward the integration of IP, broadcasting and image information services Identify future requirements for international standardization and collaboration with ITU-T/R Study Groups, SDOs, Forums, etc. My sincere thanks to our hosts and workshop organizers 12/1/2018
