2. Case Study – Ethernet over Microwave (Backhaul)

Ethernet over Microwave Transport - Engineering & Integration Team
Mobile Operator was experience high failure rate with EoMW conversions and turn up of new Ethernet hops
Microwave Network contained single hop and multi-hop drain & target architecture
Three installation companies were supporting the field operation which included provisioning the SIAD (Smart Integrated Access Device) with a pre-generated script and manually configuring the radio (Ericsson Mini Link, ALU 9500 MPR)
Cutover activities were completed in maintenance window with limited ability to test during non-maintenance window
Issues with the engineering for the SIAD would result in faulty configuration that Vendor had no domain knowledge or experience to troubleshoot
Provisioning of the radio was a manual exercise – console into the radio and provision via GUI
Created a solution for the carrier with the following service tasks:
Validate Engineering document prior to generating SIAD configuration
Identify and report back any failures with testing of OAM and bearer EVCs
Pre-test EVCs (Ethernet Virtual Circuit) using drain SIAD during maintenance window 2 nights prior to cutover
Host cutover bridge to provide subject matter expert
Validate MSN assignments and provisioning, validate SIAD configuration and provide troubleshooting support as required.
In some cases, take control of Field technician’s laptop to validate Microwave radio configuration
