Tragedy a drama that ends in catastrophe - most often death - for the main character. The audience knows what the characters don’t know. We can see how it will turn out. They can’t.

Tragic Hero In Shakespearean tragedy, the main character, the tragic hero, is usually someone who is nobly born and who may have great influence on his or her society. The tragic hero often has one or more fatal character flaws – a weakness or serious error in judgement that leads to downfall.

Comic Relief In his tragedies, Shakespeare often included comic relief, a humorous scene, incident, or speech that relieves the overall emotional intensity. The comic relief served as the bridge between two intense scenes or events.

Soliloquy A speech that a character gives when he or she is alone on stage. It’s purpose is to let the audience know what the character is thinking Aside A character’s remark, either to the audience of another character that others are not supposed to hear.

Foil A character whose personality or attitude is in sharp contrast to another character. Romeo – Mercutio Lady Capulet - Nurse
