National 5 Cell Biology Proteins
3
We are learning to: State that proteins are made of a chain of amino acids State that the order of amino acids determines the function of a protein Give examples of functions of proteins
4
What I'm looking for: Description of the structure of a protein
Table showing functions and examples of proteins
5
What are proteins? Proteins are made of long chains of small molecules called amino acids. protein molecule one amino acid There are over 20 different kinds of amino acid. Proteins are used by the body for growth and repair.
6
Functions of Proteins Watch the video
Listen closely for the different functions of a protein Complete the card sort in your group Fill out the table in your booklet
7
Functions of Proteins Protein Function Haemoglobin
Produced by white blood cells and protect body from harmful microbes Chemical messengers Carry oxygen around the body Antibodies Hormones e.g. insulin, testosterone, oestrogen, adrenaline
8
Speed up chemical reactions
Protein Function Speed up chemical reactions Transport Structural Enzymes e.g. amylase, catalase, phosphorylase Movement of molecules e.g. membrane proteins Provide shape and support e.g. collagen, keratin, actin and myosin
9
I can: State that proteins are made of a chain of amino acids
State that the order of amino acids determines the function of a protein Give examples of functions of proteins
