The Bunsen Burner Outer Flamer Inner Flamer Barrel Gas Inlet Air Valve
Base
3
The Bunsen Burner How do I Light a Bunsen Burner?
Hook up the Bunsen Burner Hose to the Gas Outlet (on the lab counter) Make sure the air valve is CLOSED OPEN CLOSED
4
The Bunsen Burner How do I Light a Bunsen Burner?
Turn on the gas about half way (until you hear a hissing sound) ON OFF
5
The Bunsen Burner How do I Light a Bunsen Burner?
Aim the flint striker on an angle AWAY FROM YOURSELF and overtop of the Bunsen Burner to light it
6
The Bunsen Burner How do I Light a Bunsen Burner?
If you do not light the BB after TWO tries, turn off the gas for 30 seconds and retry Once lit, use the air valve at the bottom of the BB, and the Gas Valve to control the size of the flame
7
The Bunsen Burner Watch this video:
What did the teacher in the video forget to mention? Make sure the air valve is closed before you light it How to use the air valve to change the size of the flame What to do if you don’t light it on your first try What the size/colour of the flame means

Safety in the Science Lab: WHMIS
Title Slide
9
What is WHMIS? WHMIS is short for Workplace Hazardous Materials
Information System
10
WHMIS is used in Canadian workplaces to provide information regarding the safe use of hazardous materials.
11
What are WHMIS Symbols? There are 8 WHMIS symbols. These symbols are put on the containers of hazardous materials. These symbols are used to help people identify which dangers a material poses.
12
COMPRESSED GAS These gases are stored under high pressure.
If heated or dropped they may EXPLODE! Ex) Propane and Acetylene bottles
13
FLAMMABLE & COMBUSTIBLE MATERIALS
Ignite and burn when exposed to a spark or flame. Ex) Oil and Gasoline
14
OXIDIZING MATERIALS Release OXYGEN which helps OTHER flammable materials to burn. Ex) Nitrogen Dioxide
15
MATERIALS CAUSING IMMEDIATE & SERIOUS TOXIC EFFECTS
Can cause serious illness or death & the effects will be seen right away. (Vomiting, Blindness, Loss of Consciousness, Coma, Death)
16
MATERIALS CAUSING OTHER TOXIC EFFECTS
Can cause life-threatening, long-term illness if continual exposure occurs. Sometimes the effects are not seen for many years. (Cancer, Birth Defects) Ex) Nicotine
17
BIOHAZARDOUS MATERIALS
Contain micro-organisms (LIVING THINGS) that can cause disease in people or animals. Ex) Contaminated blood samples and Bacteria
18
CORROSIVE MATERIALS Can burn through clothing, skin, eyes, lungs, and even metals. Ex) Hydrochloric Acid.
19
DANGEROUSLY REACTIVE MATERIALS
Can undergo spontaneous reactions. Their reactions can be extremely violent. They may react with water. Ex) Ammonia.
20
What is an MSDS? MSDS stands for Material Safety Data Sheet. An MSDS contains important information regarding the hazardous material.
21
What is an MSDS? Material Identification (Name) Hazardous Ingredients
Physical Data Fire & Explosion Data Reactivity Data Health Hazard Data First Aid Measures Preventative Measures Storage and Handling Spill Clean-up & Waste Disposal Preparation Date
22
Hazardous Household Products
Hazardous Household Product Symbols are found on the containers of dangerous materials we buy in stores and use in our homes. WHMIS symbols are found on the containers of dangerous materials that are purchased from licensed suppliers and used in science classrooms and workplaces.
23
Hazardous Household Products
What does the BORDER mean? Triangle (inverted) The container is dangerous Octagon (eight sides) The contents are dangerous
24
Symbol The Danger Produce Examples
This CONTAINER can explode if heated or dropped. Flying pieces of metal or plastic can cause injuries, especially to the eyes. Hairspray AXE body spray
25
Symbol The Danger Produce Examples
This PRODUCT can burn skin or eyes on contact or throat & stomach if swallowed. Bleach Toilet Cleaner Oven Cleaner
26
Symbol The Danger Produce Examples
This PRODUCT or its fumes can catch fire easily if it is near heat, flames or sparks. Brake fluid Gasoline Lighter fluid
27
Symbol The Danger Produce Examples
This PRODUCT can cause illness or death if consumed in small amounts. Antifreeze Furniture Polish
