Poetry- a kind of rhythmic, compressed language that uses figures of speech and imagery designed to appeal to our emotions and imaginations. Couplet- 2 consecutive lines of poetry that rhyme. Ex. I think that I shall never see A poem lovely as a tree.

Onomatopoeia- The use of words that sound like what they mean.
Ex.- Pop! Crackle! Imagery- language that appeals to the senses, especially mental pictures. Internal rhyme- rhyme that occurs within a line. Ex- Once upon a midnight dreary, while I ponder weak and weary.

Rhyme scheme- the pattern of end rhyme in a section of poetry.
Ex- My vantage point had a clear view (A) of the depths of the pit below (B) bathed with the tears of its crew (A) Repetition- a device used to emphasize the importance of words and persuasive writing and poetry

Stanza- a group of consecutive lines in a poem that form a single unit.
Symbol- a person, place, thing, or event that stands both for itself and something beyond itself. Rhyme- the repetition of accented vowel sounds and all sounds following them in words that are close together in a poem.

Simile- a figure of speech that uses like or as to compare things that seem to have little or nothing in common. Ex- I am as hungry as a horse. Metaphor- a comparison between two unlike things in which some reasonable connection is instantly revealed. Ex- The moon, a haunting lantern, shone through the clouds.

Personification- giving human qualities to something nonhuman or abstract.
My dog told me to come inside. Rhythm- a musical quality produced by the repetition of stressed and unstressed syllables or by the repetition of certain other sound patterns.

Alliteration- the repetition of initial consonant sounds in words that appear close together.
Ex. More Mischief and Merriment. Assonance- The repetition of similar, interior vowel sounds in a line of poetry. Ex. Why does my wife fly in the sky at night?

Allusion- reference to a statement, person, place, event, or thing that is known from history, religion, literature, or myth Ex. In The Glass Menagerie, Tom speaks of “Chamberlain’s umbrella”, a reference to British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain.

Refrain- a repeated sound, word, phrase, line, or group of lines.
Ex- A time to be born, and a time to die, a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted. Meter- a pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in poetry Allegory- a story or poem in which the characters, settings, and events stand for other people or events.

CONSONANCE- repetition of an interior consonant sound, sometimes at the end, within a short sentence. Ex. The kingfisher is splashing through the rushing water.

Sonnet- a 14 line poem written in iambic pentameter with a standard rhyme scheme.
Epic- a long narrative poem that tells the story of a hero.
