PROPOSAL INTRODUCTION (I)
Vision: Based on scenario forecasts, aluminum content per vehicle will continue to grow to nearly 170 kg in 2020, and around 190 kg by 2025. Additionally, growth of aluminum content will also fluctuate largely based on the OEMs ability to meet CO2 requirements with powertrain improvements and a potential switch from a mass based European CO2 regulation in the future. Wide range of Al6xxx and Al7xxx alloys are expected to be used in future EV’s. Motivation: 200 kg of aluminium in a car reduces CO2 emissions by 16 g/km. A lighter car is always more efficient. Lightweighting improves electric range for Evs. Lightweighting will be key to meet tough future regulations. Extrusion is a novel process to manufacture profiles for building battery carriers. Design freedom for battery carier will enable lighter & safer Li-ion equipped cars. Content: Extrusion of Al 6xxx & Al 7xxx series, welding of 7xxx, extrusion of 7xxx, friction welding of aluminum, Laser welding of aluminum

Expected outcome: Advanced joining techniques for Crash parts, Subframes, Battery pack/Carriers For EV Cars. Dissemination of Al7XXX series in automotive. Cost effective battery carries,subframes, crash boxes with stronger profiles extruded with 6xxx series + 7xxx reinforcements. Joining of Al 6xxx & 7xxx series with low heat effected zone. Impacts: Vision: Reduce structural mass, improve crash performance. Light vehicle platform Reduce total vehicle weight Reduce battery capacity for without range penalty Cost reduction Schedule: Q1/ Q1/ SoP: 2019
