Two-Step Equations Mrs. Book
2
Two-Step Equations A two-step equation involves two operations.
3x – 2 = 4 Get the term with the variable alone on one side of the equation and with a coefficient of 1.
3
Solve the Equation 3x = 6 3x - 2 = 4 3x -2 + 2 = 4 + 2 3x -2 + 2 = 6
Add 2 to both sides to get 3x by itself 3x = 4 + 2 3x = 6 Simplify 3x = 6 Divide by the coefficient to get the variable by itself 3x = 6 x = 2
4
Check Your Answer 3x – 2 = 4 Solution to the equation; x = 2
Substitute your solution into the equation to check your answer 3 (2) – 2 = 4 6 – 2 = 4 4 = 4
5
Solve the equation. Check your answer.
6
Solve the equation. Check your answer.
X = 243
7
Solve the equation. Check your answer.
X = 3
8
Write an equation to model each situation. Then solve your equation.
Suppose you walk at the rate of 210 ft/min. You need to walk 10,000 ft. How many more minutes will it take you to finish if you have already walked 550 ft? 210m = 10,000 m = 45
9
Justify each step
10
