Warm Up Find the missing side…Hint: use Pythagorean theorem

2 The Distance and Midpoint Formulas

3 Why is finding a distance valuable?
What is distance? Why is finding a distance valuable?

4 If we know the distance from Kingwood to Galena park is 25 miles, and the distance between Galena Park and Downtown Houston is 9 miles, Find the distance between Kingwood and Downtown Houston. Your gas tank has enough gas to get you 26 Miles. Will you have enough gas to make it to Downtown Houston, from Kingwood? A- Kingwood 25 Miles C- Downtown Houston B- Galena Park 9 Miles

5 Investigation Mathematically, we look at coordinate planes to determine the distance between two points…Let’s see how we figure it out Distance Formula!

6 Why is finding a midpoint valuable?
What is a midpoint? Why is finding a midpoint valuable?

7 The distance between Kingwood and Houston was…______Miles.
If your gas tank only has enough gas to get you half way, about where would you have to fill up your gas?

8 Investigation: Mathematically, we look at coordinate planes to
determine the location of midpoints… Let’s see how we figure it out. Midpoint Formula!

9 Distance Formula This is used to find the distance between any two points on a coordinate plane X1 and Y1 are from point 1 X2 and Y2 are from point 2

10 Example Find the distance between A(4,8) and B(1,12) A (4, 8) B (1, 12) =5

11 YOU TRY!! A. (2, 7) and (11, 9) B. (-5, 8) and (2, - 4)
Find the distance between: A. (2, 7) and (11, 9) B. (-5, 8) and (2, - 4)

12 Midpoint Formula Used to find the center of a line segment
X1 and Y1 are from point 1 X2 and Y2 are from point 2

13 Example Find the midpoint between A(4,8) and B(2,12) A (4, 8) B (2, 12) =(3, 10)

14 YOU TRY!! Find the midpoint between: A) (2, 7) and (14, 9)
B) (-5, 8) and (2, - 4)
