To insert this slide into your presentation Save this template as a presentation (.ppt file) on your computer. Open the presentation that will contain the quote slide. Informational writing is defined as presenting reasons, explanations, or steps in a process An informational essay should follow a logical sequence and have three different main points. Informational Writing is: About 1 topic and has a thesis that states the main idea. Support your main idea (thesis) with examples from text & your experiences. Informative Essays have: Introduction Body Conclusion

7 “Homeless in America” Informative Essay
Using the notes you took during the lesson and synthesizing handout write a 5 paragraph essay on the following topic: What challenges do homeless people face and how can society help?

8 The Introduction You must: Restate the Question or Prompt
Answer the Question or Prompt Hook the reader to capture their interest Include you thesis statement (main idea) Provide background information Briefly detail your examples that support your main idea.

9 Teacher Model Hook: In America, according to the text, there are well over 630,00 people who are homeless on any given day. Background Information: Many Americans assume that homelessness occurs as a consequence of the negligent actions, such as lack of self-motivation and poor financial decision making, however, the epidemic of homelessness can be caused by circumstances beyond individual control. Thesis Statement: Loss of employment, physical illnesses, and mental illness can be contributing factors that cause one to become homeless. When one becomes homeless, they face many challenges that can hinder them from changing their circumstances. Without help from their fellow man, many homeless people will remain destitute.

10 Teacher Model Supporting Evidence 1: Homeless people, as the texted indicated, tend to have issues with malnutrition and starvation because they do not have adequate access to healthy and sanitary foods. There are many ways that Americans can help homeless people acquire healthy food such as donating to their local missions. Supporting Evidence 2: Many homeless people often struggle to find adequate shelters and temporary living arrangements to protect them. When they are out on the streets, they are subject to being dehumanized by others that rob them, bully them, and shame them because of their circumstances. As Americans, we have to protect those that cannot protect themselves, we have the ability to provide programs that can prevent the homeless from being subjected to these horrors and provide opportunities to change their situations. Supporting Evidence 3: Children that come from homeless families suffer the most during these terrible times. Homeless children face challenges such as being isolated due to fear of rejection, they become depressed and suffer issues in their self-esteem, and their education also suffers because they do not have the mind frame and the time to dedicate to their learning. Children that are homeless need us. They need us to provide places that they can go and be children. They need an environment that supports them and their needs during this difficult time in their lives.

11 Teacher Model Concluding Sentence: Depending on how our society responds to the epidemic of homelessness, homeless people can either conquer their challenges or be defeated by those challenges. As a society, we need to be held accountable for those that are less fortunate, we need to protect them, and motivate them to create better circumstances for themselves. What will you do today to change the life of a homeless person.

12 Body Paragraphs Each body paragraph will be on one of the 3 points you listed in your thesis sentence. Each point must be written in the order in which it appeared in your thesis sentence. First Body Paragraph will be about the point you listed first Second Body Paragraph discuses the second point Third Body Paragraph will be about third point. TIP: Look back at your thesis sentence to be sure you write about each point in its proper place!

13 Body Paragraphs Body Paragraphs Should Include: Topic Sentence
Provide the main idea of the paragraph. Supporting Evidence Include specific textual evidence: cited quotes, paraphrases or summary; or evidence that supports your thesis from other sources: anecdotes, first-person interviews or your own experience. Analysis Explain to the reader the significance of the evidence you have provided. Think about why you chose to include it. How does the piece of evidence support your thesis? Transition Connect each paragraph with a sentence or two that demonstrates how each idea leads into the next, and how they work together to support your position.

14 The Conclusion Rephrase your thesis statement but not word for word.
You may want to use a key word “theme” or “style” for example, but word it differently than in your introduction paragraph. Reread your body paragraphs Usually, it is best to briefly summarize the important parts of your body paragraphs in a general way. Don’t use the same wording. Reread your introduction Can you “tieback” to the introduction in some way? If so, this is almost always a good idea. End with a clincher that powerfully ends your paper. Somewhere in this paragraph directly or indirectly explain the significance of the thesis
