Environmental impacts
Largest environmental impact usually energy consumption: Energy efficiency Pull Target = least life cycle cost Minimum energy efficiency requirement Push BAN Average product Other regulated environmental impacts: Noise, to avoid that efficiency improvements would be at the cost of higher noise emissions Refrigerants - Lower efficiency for refrigerants GWP ≤ 150, to stimulate the market to use low GWP refrigerants

Challenges for EU wide regulations
Europe is diverse Ecodesign is based on EU averages, i.e. average purchase costs, electricity prices, average efficiencies, etc. Regulations need to protect all EU citizens including: Consumers with low incomes People who work at small and medium size enterprises Society as a whole with regards to climate change Etc. A good balance needs to be found!

Other challenges Market surveillance:
Strong market surveillance ensures compliance with the regulations. Today each member state of the EU is responsible for market surveillance in their country. Projects are being set up to coordinate the market surveillance actions and improve compliance Resource efficiency requirements (recyclability, reparability, upgradability, durability, etc.): Commitment to better contribute to objectives of circular economy. No single methodology to set requirements. => Standards are under preparation and ideally the methodology to set ecodesign requirements should be updated.
