The Respiratory Organs
Structure Function Nostril Opening which leads to the nasal cavity. Enables air to enter the nasal cavity. 2. Pharynx Throat cavity Enables air from the nasal cavity to enter the trachea. 3. Tonsils Soft mass of lymph tissues Produces sounds 4. Larynx Triangular ridge called the Adam’s apple; contains the vocal cords. 5. Epiglottis Leaf-like plate of flexible cartilage. Controls opening to larynx.

Structure -Function 6. Trachea Tube measuring 11.5 cm long and 2.5 cm in diameter; also called the wind pipe. Enables air to get to the lungs; a passageway. 7. Bronchi Two tubes found at the lower end of the trachea. Enable air to pass through. 8. Bronchioles Network of bronchial tubes ending in a tiny chamber. Allow the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide; contain air sacs. 9. Alveoli or Air sac Air sac surrounded by many blood vessels. Main organ or respiration. 10. Lung Sponge-like cone-shaped organs composed of three lobes, separated by pleural membranes. Filters and purifies air.
