BREAKOUT SESSION RECOVERY MINISTRY OVERVIEW Nate Graybill and Ann Daly
2
INTRODUCTION
3
THE SITUATION Churches are overwhelmed with many people with many problems. This world is broken. A larger percentage of people are unchurched. People in the church are influenced by culture rather than biblical worldview. People don’t go to their church for help. Why? “Terminally unique” Afraid of being known. Pastors don’t have time, or staff doesn’t want to get in the mess. Church culture is not a safe environment for healing. Church does not have the “expertise.”
4
THE RESULT People go to 3rd party counselors.
People become disconnected from the local church. Church is not shepherding the flock. People are isolated within the church. Missed opportunities for discipleship, care and correction, restoration. Struggling person shares limited info/no accountability. Inauthentic church relationships/fellowship (including staff and leaders).

THE ANSWER TO EVERY SIN PROBLEM: JESUS
Jesus is the healer working through the Spirit. Luke 4:18-19, Matthew 11:28-30 Every sin problem is a symptom of misplaced worship and idolatry. Codependency, pride, insecurity/identity, homosexuality, overspending, addictions to alcohol/substances, guilt and shame, abuse, etc. Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. – Galatians 5:19-21 We all need recovery in Christ.
6
GOD’S PLAN A Galatians 6:2, James 5:16, 1 John 1:7-9
We, the Church, are to shepherd God’s flock by: God’s Spirit (1 Corinthians 2:10-16) God’s Word (2 Timothy 3:16-17) God’s People (2 Corinthians 1:3-5)
7
WHAT DOES THIS LOOK LIKE, PRACTICALLY?
We all need recovery in Christ: recovery = discipleship = sanctification Vision: clarity on the church’s role and authentic community Culture Leadership modeling and giving ministry away Environments and tools Group environments Curriculum / Tools

RECOVERY STEPS (SANCTIFICATION)
Admit – Nature of Man Believe – Nature of God Trust – Salvation in Christ Inventory – Idols & Patterns Confess – Healing & Cleansing Repent – Turning (from & to) Follow – Walk by Spirit Forgive – Transfer of Debt Amends – Repair Sin’s Damage Continue – Daily Disciplines Intimacy – Growing & Knowing Regenerate – Discipleship/Reconciliation

RECOVERY DISCIPLESHIP PRINCIPLES
Freedom is a by-product of daily abiding with Christ. Intimacy with God - not just behavior change (sobriety) - is the goal. Sinful patterns are symptoms of misplaced worship/idolatry. Healing comes through a community versus one-on-one counseling. Mixing issues focuses on the heart and exposes “terminal uniqueness.” Rest in the sovereignty of God. Jesus and his Spirit, not you, heals and changes. Give time and help people go one step at a time, over time. Not a quick fix, but learning to walk with Jesus through steps for a lifetime.

God’s Spirit, By God’s Word Working Through God’s People, Changes Lives.
Gain knowledge of the full counsel of God. All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. – 2 Timothy 3:16-17 Model ministry. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you. – Philippians 4:9 Equip the saints. And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds[c] and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ - Ephesians 4:11-12 Give away the work. …from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love. – Ephesians 4:16

REFLECTION QUESTIONS How are you modeling recovery?
Which of your struggles are still hidden? How do you handle staff/leaders struggling? What sin struggles are categorized as those we can handle versus outsourced? Who handles coming alongside people stuck in sin/struggles? Where is more equipping needed on the biblical healing path - with staff, key leaders, and the body in general? What tools or environments might help?
