3. Pharisees – Middle-class, conservative, religious leaders who followed the Law of Moses to the letter
Sadducees – Wealthy, liberal, religious leaders who wanted to maintain the status quo; Didn’t believe in the resurrection,
angels, etc.

4. The Synagogue – Meeting place for the Jews to teach the Law
Scribes – Copied and interpreted the Scriptures; Were experts in the Law of Moses who are also called lawyers

Publicans – Tax collectors for the Roman government; Usually dishonest and hated by other Jews
