Figure 1 Different types of camouflage in nature.
Top left is a juvenile horned ghost crab (Ocypode ceratophthalma), illustrating background matching. Top right is a fiery-necked nightjar (Caprimulgus pectoralis), which resembles its background, but also has strong disruptive markings to break up the body shape. Middle left is a stick insect (unknown species) masquerading as dead grass, and middle right is an eyed-hawk moth caterpillar (Smerinthus ocellata), which has countershading to cancel out its own body shadows. Bottom left is a long-legged spider crab (Macropodia rostrata), decorated with seaweed, and bottom right are all furrowed crabs (Xantho incisus), with high diversity in individual appearance.
