Warm Up: Coin Flipping Activity
Make a T-chart on your notebook. Start flipping your coin and record. Do this 54 times? How many times did you flip a head? How many times did your coin land on a tail? What did you just given me in term of mathematical word??????????????????
3
The chance that an even will occur The basic for making prediction
What is a probability? The chance that an even will occur The basic for making prediction Widely used in games of chance, investing and weather forecasting
4
Sample Space The set of ALL POSSIBLE outcomes of a probability experiment
5
Example: Find the size of and describe the same space
Experiment Size Sample Space Tossing a coin Tossing 2 coins Drawing 1 card Rolling a die Rolling 2 dice The gender of 3 Children Tossing a coin & Rolling a die
6
Experimental Probability
A process where several trials lead to a group of results that are called outcomes A trial results in an outcome … an experiment is all the out comes combined Example: Flipping a coin What you just did for the warm up is consider to be and experimental probability? Must do an experiment
7
Classical/Theoretical Probability
Use sample space to determine the probability that an even will occur Assume that all outcomes are equally likely to occur
8
4 Rules of Probability The probability of any event is a number (either fraction or decimal) between and including 0 & 1 If an event (E) absolutely cannot occur, it’s probability is 0. If an event is certain to occur, then the probability is 1. The sum of all the probabilities of the outcomes in any sample space is always 1.
9
is an event that describes a single outcome. Compound event
Type of event Simple event is an event that describes a single outcome. Compound event is an event made up of two or more simple events
10
Union All the possible outcome in an event
List the sample space for getting a Queen and heart. Recall that the union symbol means “or.” Remember!
11
Intersection Find the possible outcome when roll a dice to get an even or prime number What do they have in common? Define: Intersection is what they’ve share (overlapping part in a Venn Diagram)
12
What are those that are not consider even? 1, 3, 5 Correct
Complement When rolling a dice, what is the outcome for rolling an even number? Write down the sample space. 2, 4, 6 Correct What are those that are not consider even? 1, 3, 5 Correct These are said to be complement of each other
13
Practice: 13.3 Exercises, pp ; 1-30
14
Skittle Experiment Randomly pick out skittles in your bag and record the color. (Remember to put it back) Repeat this 25 times and record the color each time What is the experimental probability of getting a red? What is the theoretical probability of getting a red?
