from the Young People of Wales to the Young People of the World Today @CymruHeddwch @WalesforPeace
2
The First Message The inspiration of Rev. Gwilym Davies, Cwm Rhymney
Sent by wireless telegraphy in 1922 The first message expressed the wish, following the drastic losses of WW1, that “there will be no need for any of us, as we grow older, to show our pride for the country in which we were born by going out to hate and to kill one another.” Picked up by the director of the Eiffel Tower radio station, and sent on in French

Who was Gwilym Davies? A Baptist Minister, but gave up active ministry in to work for world peace. Helped to set up the Welsh Union of the League of Nations and UNESCO Felt strongly that education and the voice of children and young people were important in creating international peace and understanding He was very persistent! Made sure that the Message was broadcast on the BBC each year from 1924 onwards, and never gave up promoting the Message!
4
Development of the Message
In 1924 the BBC broadcast the message for the first time, and two responses were received, one from Sweden and the other from Poland. In 1927, Nobel Peace Prize winner, Dr Nansen, noted: “I feel convinced that it is the spirit in this message of the children of Wales which humanity needs.” By countries had responded As well as the Message itself, youth peace camps were held in Wales and overseas trips were arranged to promote cultural exchange and international understanding.

Some Questions to Consider
What does the Message of Peace and Goodwill mean to you? If you had a really important message to get across, how would you share it? Do you think it’s important for young people to voice their opinions about what’s happening in the world? Why / why not? What can we gain by sharing views and opinions with people from different countries? Can young people make a difference in promoting peace locally, nationally and internationally? If so, how?
