2 LONDON WAS IT FINE OR FOUL?

3 London London in Tudor times was the biggest city in Europe with between 130,000 and 150,000 inhabitants. It was a colourful city and contained the best and worst of city life. The Best: The buildings were impressive and there were many merchants who had travelled all over the world selling their goods in London. The public was entertained by street performers, playhouses, and spectacles such as bear baiting. It was a fun place to live if you were wealthy, but not so nice if you were poor.

4 LONDON

5 London However, if you were poor it was a very dangerous place to be. London was absolutely filthy with waste floating in the streets. Despite the many warnings like the streets being lined with ‘Heads on Poles’ as you entered the city, the city acted as a magnet for beggars, thieves and tricksters from across the country. The streets were filled with alehouses, gambling dens and brothels. Street ‘entertainment’ also included bear baiting and watching people being executed! The houses were made of wood so were a potential fire hazard.
