Self-Care Summit, European Self-Care towards 2030 – challenges and visions
Copenhagen, 12 April It has been a pleasure to spent the last two days surrounded by so many enthusiastic professionals, working hard to make self-care a reality in Europe As a firm believer in the importance of self-care, I am happy to see our community looking towards the future; this summit was an excellent opportunity for us all to think about the direction self-care needs to follow, in order to turn the challenges we face into reality Contact: Jacqueline Bowman-Busato Tel:

Self-Care Initiative Europe (SCiE)
a multi-stakeholder pan-EU network self-care from policy to practice embedded across health ecosystems in Europe Objectives: By 2020 well-being and self-care in a holistic sense is understood and accepted as a concept in Europe Ensure it is a part of the measurement for success of a functioning health ecosystem from policy to practice at all levels. Build capacity and empower the various relevant stakeholders Most of us know each other already, but, once again, allow me to introduce myself - I am the Principal and Founder of Third-i, a member of the SCiE (Self-Care Initiative Europe) Consortium The Self-Care Initiative Europe (SCiE) is a multi-stakeholder pan-EU network with a mission to embed self-care from policy to practice across health ecosystems in Europe. As such, the main objectives are to: By 2020 well-being and self-care in a holistic sense is understood and accepted as a concept in Europe by all actors who can have an impact on its success Ensure it is embedded as part of the measurement for success of a functioning health ecosystem from policy to practice at all levels. Build capacity and empower the various relevant stakeholders to embed self-care into health and wellbeing (including individuals, employers, economic actors, civil society, public administrations, healthcare manufacturers and providers, payers and communicators)

Our Vision, our future reality?
Objective 1, Embedding: By 2020 self-care is permanently included in policy discourse at all levels, with a common definition adopted by all relevant stakeholders Objective 2, Measuring: Self-care is included as an indicator for evaluation of measuring healthcare systems across Europe Objective 3, Empowering: All relevant stakeholders are empowered through policy to incorporate and establish self-care within their relevant environments, and a proper accountability system is set in place With this in mind, allow me to outline the main policy objectives in our work version of the Manifesto; to us, these represent the future of self-care, such as it should be: Objective 1 (on slide): Our key asks on this include: ensuring that policy makers from the EU and national levels to actively include self-care within integrated health reform solutions on related topics we call on policy makers from the international level to include self-care as an essential element of healthcare strategies, in light of the Sustainable Development Goals we call on policy makers from the national and EU levels to ensure that self-care is included as an essential part of health literacy exercises and activities across Europe and at local level through the establishment of a legal basis for the self-care concept Objective 2 (on slide): We call on policy makers from the national and EU level, as well as on the members of the EU HSPA Expert Group to include self-care as part of the performance criteria for healthcare systems in Europe We call for inclusion of self-care across the continuum, from daily choices and lifestyle to major trauma and recovery from such, in order to embed it as an essential component of health and health management Objective 3 (on slide): We call for the inclusion of self-care and self-management in the curricula of all Healthcare Professionals in Europe We call for inclusion of self-care as a case study for pilot projects on m-health and within the work of the European Commission internal task force bringing together technology and health policy makers All relevant stakeholders need to be taken into consideration and included in consultations and social dialogues at national, EU and international levels; exchange of information, knowledge and data between and from all relevant stakeholders on implementation of self-care should be facilitated across Member States; the proper accountability measures, sanctions, and processes should be set in place at all levels We call for the establishment of an EU-wide platform monitoring self-care projects, initiatives and activities across Member States in order to encourage exchange of best practices, ensure reliability of information, as well as to avoid duplication of existing efforts in the field I would like to highlight that all of us should work together, hand in hand, in order to make these objectives a reality across Europe, so in case any of you are interested in joining the Task Force, find me after this session!

One big challenge Its not only about understanding change in mindset at a top level. Nor do we need to tear everything down and start again. Its unrealistic!

Policy Stakeholder Task Force: a vision for self-care policy priorities
The initiative is divided into three main pillars, one on public engagement, one of knowledge management, and a policy pillar. Third-i is the day-to-day lead for the policy pillar While we have been in discussion with a number of stakeholders for a while now, the first Policy pillar Task Force (a group of stakeholders working together to change the policy status quo on self care) meeting took place on 1 March this year, in Brussels We were able to touch on a number of important ideas, with the group brainstorming and co-creating solutions to the most pressing topics of self-care in order to ensure that this issue is prioritised by policy makers at all levels

SCiE Manifesto Goals: establishes the main framework of SCiE policy position, allowing the group to speak with one voice and represent the initiative outlines the top three priority SCiE asks towards policy makers outlines the SCiE goals and vision for the next 5 years, especially in light of the upcoming changes in leadership at EU level Next steps: Incorporating your feedback Task Force members finalising Manifesto to be co-branded one of the first points of action for the Task Force was the establishment of a Manifesto, which will help support advocacy efforts on self-care the Manifesto aims to focus on not just the European, but national and local levels alike with this in mind, during yesterday’s dinner, we focused and contributed to some of the main messaging for the work version of the document it is important to note that these messages are still pending finalisation, especially keeping in mind that all members of our Task Force have equal voice on such matters

SCiE Manifesto - your feedback
Embedding We need to make the case for self-care economic as well as ideological Measuring We should focus on indicators for process rather than outcomes Empowering We have to get the balance right between top-down and bottom-up models or engagement Thanks for the lively discussions at the dinner - we are putting your feedback together, but these are the main points that came up from more than one table, for each of the Manifesto objectives.

I would like to once again highlight my firm belief that the future of health is self-care, and that it can indeed save your life, help you manage your conditions, or just live in a better, more wholesome way! And if the objectives of our Task Force group become a reality (sooner than 2030, I hope), everyone in Europe will have the chance to take control of your own health: this is my wish for the future!
