Main Idea The Edwards Plateau, located in the far south of the Great Plains region, has a diverse economy because of its geography. Detail: Its thin soil and small shrubs make the area suitable for grazing, allowing cattle and sheep ranching to thrive. Del Rio, the plateau’s largest city, shares a border with Mexico, which allows for trade and tourism. The Hill Country section of the plateau draws tourists to its natural landmarks, national parks, and hunting opportunities. 3:4

3:3 North Central Plains The North Central Plains region is found between the Caprock and Balcones Escarpments. Cattle ranching dominates the economy of this region. Outside of the region’s few cities; Wichita Falls and Abilene; populations are generally low.

The Rolling Plains The Rolling Plains is the largest section of the North Central Plains. Industry includes cattle and sheep ranching as well as farming crops such as cotton, wheat, peaches, and pecans. Large-scale commercial farming, or agribusiness, is strong in the southwest city of San Angelo.

Cross Timbers and the Grand Prairie
The Cross Timbers area produces blackjack oak and post oak trees, as well as hickories, pecans, and elms. Industries include agriculture, dairy farming, livestock, and manufacturing. The Grand Prairie features grazing land and supports ranching and crop farming. The city of Fort Worth is part of the Metroplex, a 20-county center of manufacturing and trade.
