GCSE PE COURSE: THEORY: 40% Written examination at end of course (1.5hrs with 80 marks – last 2 questions require ‘Quality Written Communication’) SECTION A Participation to Maximise Health & Performance (healthy, active lifestyles) 1. Reasons & benefits of participation 2. Influences & opportunities for participation 3. Components of exercise & fitness (HRE & SRF) 4. Principles & methods of training 5. Diet SECTION B The Body Systems (your healthy, active body) 6. Cardiovascular system 7. Respiratory system 8. Muscular system 9. Skeletal system 10. Body types, safety & drugs PRACTICAL: 60% 4 activities chosen + AoP to be assessed throughout course & again during Moderation Player/ performer + Official + Leader & Analysis of Performance Best 4 Practical activities in 2 different areas of National Curriculum with at least 2 as performer (other 2 can be performer or official or leader – see practical assessment sheet for more details) Marked out of 10 in each (worth 12.5% of final mark each) Analysis of Performance in 1 chosen activity made of 5 sections (inc. PEP) – on Dartfish/ PowerPoint. Marked out of 20 (worth 10% of final mark) Transparent Learning: Big picture where this fits in whole PE course 2 of 28 Edexcel GCSE PE 2009

UNIT 8: Explain what constitutes a healthy, active lifestyle Exercise and physical activity immediate and short-term effects of participation in exercise and physical activity (isometric and isotonic contractions, responses – increased fuel/energy demands, lactic acid) effects of regular participation in – and long-term effects of participation in – exercise and physical activity (adaptations – increased strength and size/hypertrophy) the potential for injuries such as muscle strain and muscle atrophy (due to injury and inactivity), and their treatment using common techniques Rest (rest required for adaptation to take place, time for recovery before next exercise session) Diet (effects of protein in building and repairing muscles) Performance enhancing drugs (use of steroids to aid muscle building and recovery). The Muscular System- Part 1
Please copy down the date, title and learning outcome and complete the starter Extension Task (A/B Students) Draw a stick man and identify the muscles of the body. You should know this from years 7-10 The Muscular System- Part 1 Learning Objectives: Taking a look at the different types of muscle and seeing where they are located Learning Outcome: A ANALYSE, EVALUATE & APPLY: I can explain the 3 types of muscle and list the functions of the muscular system. I am able to apply the names of muscles to examples in sport. I can name the location of the 11 muscles and demonstrate a stretch for most of them. B UNDERSTAND & EXPLAIN: Explain what the 3 different muscle types do, I can remember the names of all of the muscles and can identify their locations. I spell most of the muscles correctly. C KNOW & DEFINE: Know the types of muscles and most of the names. I struggle with spelling the names. Time for activity on each page. Starter is to complete the wordsearch on the muscular system

Success Criteria A*-B Types of muscles 11 muscles Movement Types of contraction I have sporting examples Types of muscle fibres Short term effects Long term effects A* Students Will contribute, lead and develop their group by referencing the success criteria. They can link and explain the points on the map B Students Will contribute and add to the mind map. They stay on task and notice areas to add to

Muscle classification
Muscles are involved in every movement in your body. Muscle is a special type of tissue made up of fibres that contract (shorten) and relax (lengthen). There are three types of muscle fibre. Image © 2006 Jupiterimages Corporation

CLASSIFICATION OF MUSCLES
THREE TYPES Voluntary Muscles Involuntary Muscles Cardiac Muscles
8
1.Voluntary Muscle The type of muscle responsible for moving your arms and legs is called voluntary muscle. It is attached to bones. It moves these bones under your conscious control. When these signals stop, the muscles relax again.
9
2. Involuntary Muscle Involuntary muscle is found in and around organs such as the intestines, and around blood vessels. It works without you consciously controlling it, or even being aware of it.
10
3. Cardiac muscle Cardiac muscle is a special type of muscle that forms the walls of the heart chambers. It is a type of involuntary muscle, as it contracts without conscious thought or effort. As long as the heart is healthy, cardiac muscle never gets tired.
11
Task In your workbooks write down all the muscles you can remember from years Spell them as best as you can.
12
MUSCLES YOU NEED TO KNOW……………
Task- you have 2 mins to see how many you can remember A – 9 or more B – 7 or more C – 6 or more Deltoids Biceps Triceps Pectorals Abdominals Trapezius Latissimus Dorsi Gluteus Maximus Hamstrings Quadriceps Gastrocnemius
13
Progress check Re-visit the outcome you choose at the beginning.
Are you on track to meet your target? Complete the activity on the next slide to gauge your progress A/A* B C D
14
Task for A/B Students Complete the diagram in your workbooks without using notes. Having named all the muscles identify sporting actions where this muscle is of major importance. Task for C/D Students Complete the diagram in your workbooks. Label all the muscles on the diagram. Try not to use notes.

Plenary: What have we learned today?
Post it relay Break into 3 groups. Using the post it notes, write and stick on a person in the group the muscles in the correct place.
