1 Composition Right vs. Wrong

2 The 4 compositional rules:
1. Focal Point using the rule of thirds 2. Balanced positive / negative space 3. Breaking the picture plane (3 out of 4) 4. Using 3 out of 4 corners (intersecting / framing)

3 1. Rule of 3rds In art the composition is divided into thirds both horizontally and vertically (making a tic-tac-toe board). The focal point is placed at one of the four the intersecting sections of the grid. This keeps the focal point from being placed in the center.

4 Don’t: place anything directly in the middle…

5 3. Breaking the picture plane
the space around the objects is broken up into smaller, more interesting shapes. Too much negative space created dead, boring space and keeps the eye from moving.. Too much!! Zoom in- Perfect!

6 4. Use 3 out of 4 corners WRONG!
By intersecting and framing the corners with objects or lines assists in creating a place for the eye to naturally enter the composition. WRONG!

7 {tip} Create variations in height!

8 {tip} Use contrast in Elements (OPPOSITS) geometric organic
