3. 1. Rule of 3rds
In art the composition is divided into thirds both horizontally and vertically (making a tic-tac-toe board). The focal point is placed at one of the four the intersecting sections of the grid. This keeps the focal point from being placed in the center.

5. 3. Breaking the picture plane
the space around the objects is broken up into smaller, more interesting shapes. Too much negative space created dead, boring space and keeps the eye from moving..

By intersecting and framing the corners with objects or lines assists in creating a place for the eye to naturally enter the composition.
