8. Dividing with Remainders
What happens when you have 12 cookies and have to divide them equally between 5 people? How many are left over?
A remainder is a number that is left over. In this problem, the answer would be that each person gets 2 cookies and there will be 2 left over. We would write this as:
12 ÷ 5 = 2 R 2. The R stands for remainder.

23 ÷ 3
To solve, first think: what is the closest multiple of 3 to 23?
3 x 7 = 21. The answer is 7.
Now, subtract 23 – 21 to find the remainder.
23 – 21 = 2, so the answer is 7 R 2.

10. Making Equal Groups with Remainders
Sometimes it helps to visualize remainders by drawing a picture.
14 ÷ 4- Make equal groups of 4. How many are left over?
