Operation Barbarossa British withstood the worst the Germans could bring; December 1940, Hitler ordered Operation B.; assault on the Soviet Union. Instead of a dead on attack, Germans used submarines to cut off shipping; which got rid of most of the British supplies. Italy hoped to eventually supplant Britain in the region; take over Britain Sep the Italian army to Egypt for almost 3 years of fighting across the North African desert. The German forays into the Balkans and North Africa had delayed the crucial attack on the Soviet Union. France Italy
