How to start acting like a scientist.
The Nature of Science How to start acting like a scientist.
2
Chapter One Lesson One What do Scientist do?
I will know how scientists use inquiry to learn about the world around them. Chapter One Lesson One What do Scientist do?
3
What is inquiry? Inquiry is a process of being open to wonder and puzzlement. Inquiry is coming to know and understand the world. Inquiry is posing a problem and then trying to find a solution. Inquiry is ASKING SCIENTIFIC QUESTIONS AND FINDING THE ANSWERS.
4
What Questions do Scientists Ask?
Good scientific questions can be answered by making observations and making measurements
5
Examples of testable questions
Bad Example Good Example How well do different materials sink or float in water? Which type of battery lasts the longest? How can birds be classified? What is my favorite toy to play with in the pool? Which battery is the best? Are birds awesome?
6
Make observations and ask questions
When we describe something using our five senses, it is called an observation. Most experiments begin with a testable question that came from an observation. Testable questions are always about changing one thing to see what the effect is on another thing.
8
What TWO steps do scientists take to better understand the world
What TWO steps do scientists take to better understand the world? (Hint: Think about what scientific inquiry) Define the problem or ask a question. Try to find the answer using inquiry.
9
Scientific Research and Knowledge
Only use reliable sources Reliable sources have been validated by other scientists Used to draw conclusions
10
Why is it important for scientists to only use reliable information that has been reviewed by other scientists? Scientists must be sure that the information has been verified, so they can draw valid conclusion.
11
Predict and Make Hypotheses
A possible answer to your question A prediction, but not a fact! A hypothesis is a statement, based on previous observations, that can be tested scientifically.
12
Practice Problem: What effect does putting salt in boiling water have on the time it take to boil? Possible Hypothesis: If salt is added to water, then the amount of time it take to boil will decrease because salt water boils at a higher temperature.
13
Practice Problem: Will adding more laundry detergent than what is recommended work better? Hypothesis: The results of this experiment will show that when laundry detergent is added to dirty laundry, the more that is used, the cleaner the clothes will be.
14
Is a hypothesis a statement based on what you know will happen during an experiment?
NO! Are you crazy! Your hypothesis is stated at the beginning of an investigation. How would you KNOW what will happen if you haven’t done any experimenting yet?
15
Is a hypothesis a statement based on what you know will happen during an experiment?
A hypothesis is a statement of what you THINK will happen during an experiment.
16
Make Observations Type of skill Use five senses and tools
Very organized Used to draw conclusions Share with other scientists
17
Draw Conclusions Analyze and summarize your data
Was your hypothesis supported? Share your results with other scientists
