3 Speech rec implemented – back-up directory assistance
Highlights - Projects Speech rec implemented – back-up directory assistance Changed audio conferencing platform to Conference America Web conferencing 2 vendor strategy: Webex and Elluminate. Contract phase. Disaster recovery implemented for Voic and I3: 2 sites, more to come IP Video (Video Furnace) implemented – retiring legacy video network. Harvard University Information Systems

4 What’s Keeping us busy now?
Web – all the time. Change, updates, on-line functionality (service orders). Conducting an increasing amount of business over the web. Convergence strategy. Retiring the existing Cisco VoIP pilot. RFP for UM, vendor vision invitations for UC. Cellular – Provisioning, billing. Extensive IBRD project; growth of voice/data plans, wireless cards; TEM investigation Pandemic Plan - University approach, communications considered a critical component Exchange and AD – Central Admin first. 5 Infrastructure for communications Unified network (we think) platform
The Next Few Years….. A new campus in Allston (contiguous to HBS) – 50 year build out planned Infrastructure for communications Unified network (we think) platform First Science building complex, 2009 Impetus for Unified Communications, strategy formulated over next few years. Harvard University Information Systems

6 Network Overview, Projects, Allston

7 Network Infrastructure Scope
Serving the entire Harvard University Networking Community 125,000+ users on the Harvard Core Network – Schools, Faculties, Departments and Affiliates 1,000,000+ users served by the NoX – New England’s Internet2 Aggregation Point >500,000 IP Addresses routed on the Harvard Border /16 (Harvard’s Primary Class B) is 56% assigned /16 (Harvard’s Primary Class B assigned to LMAnet) is 80% assigned >250 Miles of Harvard owned Fiber Plant supports the University Network Infrastructure The NOC maintains ~500 Network Devices across the entire infrastructure >350,000 lines of router/switch configuration code Total Core Network Traffic averages ~ Terabytes daily Real-Time Border Gateway Complex and Core Network Security Operations 13.3 million IDS hits in FY06 10,400 auto-alerts generated from IDS thresholding strategy We trigger auto-alerts off a groomed signature set of 23 sigs Stateful packet inspection of all Border traffic (~20 Terabytes/day) with IDS and ADS technologies provides unprecedented traffic visibility which translates into greater security awareness and forensics capabilities Harvard University Information Systems

8 Reliable Network Services Delivery
University Border Gateway Complex % Service Reliability External Gateway for the entire University community Total daily traffic average TeraBytes 2 Commercial Providers - Qwest and Cogent, both dual connected at 1 GigE NoX is dual connected as well - 10 GigE and 1GigE, 10 GigE uplink to I2 Backbone Core Network – 19 major network elements % uptime Cisco 7600 and 6500 Class chassis 143,075 lines of router/switch configuration code across core network as of 3/14/07 30,429 lines are Firewall/ACL rulesets Domain Name Service % uptime >197,000 Domain Records hosted by the Harvard’s Primary Master DNS cluster >10% annual growth seen in volume of Harvard Domain Name entries >300,000,000 average weekly queries against Master DNS Cluster University Relays – % uptime ~12,000 University Aliases being served >1,500,000 Messages forwarded weekly ~40 Gigabytes of data forwarded weekly UIS NOC Level 3 network support continues to expand 28,225 live jacks supported ao 9/01/06 23% annual increase Harvard University Information Systems

10 FY08 Initiative Planning
Security, Security and more Security! Continue with core network robustness initiatives Dual SUP720’s and FWSM’s where possible Improve fiber plant physical diversity as budget allows Router and Fiber site upgrades - Rack, Power, Cooling and Security improvements where required Infrastructure protection and security initiatives Initiatives supporting the expanding footprint of the University Core Network Allston Area Initiatives LMA/Fenway expansion Additional RESnet locations Wireless network expansion and upgrades Migrate NOC VPN offering from client based to clientless SSL architecture Core Network Rollout of PacketFence System Centralized NAC via HUID/PIN Monitoring of validated systems for worm/viri infection Immediate isolation and reporting of infected/hostile systems Harvard University Information Systems
