1 User Scenarios - Simplification
The only purpose of this presentation is to clarify basic terms and scenarios, in a very high level. Assuming there are 2 different standards, which is the most likely scenario, the Industry and the Market should expect some grade of service, i.e. some level of coexistence and convergence. More specific consequences and a detailed proposed road map for implementation will be presented tomorrow.

2 Terminology Coexistence: Interworking:
Communicating devices using a or HiperLAN/2 can operate in the same coverage area without harmful interference by sharing the available channels by Using Frequency Sharing Etiquette based on Dynamic Frequency Selection, i.e, a device sensing a busy channel will rescan the busy channels in order to find a free channel. Using an agreed mechanism that enables both types of devices to share the same channel within the same coverage area. Interworking: Devices operating according to one of the standards can exchange data with network infrastructure (Access points) and with the second type of devices.

3 Coexistence & Interoperability - Different Levels
Communicating devices using a or HiperLAN/2 can not operate in the same coverage area without harmful interference Communicating devices using a or HiperLAN/2 can not exchange data. Level 1 Communicating devices using a or HiperLAN/2 can operate in the same coverage area by using different channels Communicating devices using a or HiperLAN/2 can exchange data using the network backbone. Level 2 Communicating devices using a or HiperLAN/2 can operate in the same coverage Using an agreed mechanism that enables both types of devices to share the same channel Communicating devices using a or HiperLAN/2 can exchange data using Layer 2 bridge in the Access Point Level 3 Communicating devices using a or HiperLAN/2 can exchange data directly on a ad-hoc basis The same as Level 2

4 Possible Public\Enterprise Scenario
Users wish to have coverage by all standards everywhere, i.e. a radio network deployed based on one standard need to serve MTs/STAs from the other standard. Users wish to establish ad-hoc network from one type within the coverage area of a second type of network. Internet Deploying two APs per cell in order to enable service for all kinds of devices is too expensive in terms of $$ and frequencies. Coexist – Level 2 Interop – Level 1 or 2 Cell 1 Cell 2 HiperLAN2 802.11a 802.11a Ad-hoc HL2 MT HL2 MT STA STA

5 Possible Home Scenario
A business man coming home with his laptop which includes wireless LAN card and would like to connect the laptop to the home network which is managed by an HL2 residential gateway. The Home GW should supports both and HL2 devices. Using two separate networks is too complicated and too expensive. STA 802.11a Home GW CATV Ethernet Coexist – Level 2 Interop – Level 1 or 2 HiperLAN2 STB HL2 MTs IEEE 1394

6 Road-map Standard committees have to decide whether they are supporting the above/additional scenarios. Time-limit for proposal to implement those needs. After adopting a solution, implementation in both standard committees must take place in a special group.
