1 2-2 Properties of Water Q: How does the structure of water contribute to its unique properties? A: Because water is a polar molecule, it is able to form multiple hydrogen bonds, which account for many of water’s special properties.

2 The Water Molecule Polarity-uneven distribution of electrons Hydrogen Bond-attract each other Cohesion-attraction of molecules of the same substance Adhesion-attraction of molecules of the different substances. Heat Capacity-energy needed to raise temp. is high

3 Solutions and Suspensions
Q: How does water’s polarity influence its properties as a solvent? A: Water’s polarity gives it the ability to dissolve both ionic compounds and other polar molecules.

4 Mixture-2 or more elements/compounds mixed together.
Solutions Solution-all parts evenly distributed Solvent-what it is dissolved in. Solute-what is dissolved. Suspensions-mixture of water and nondissolved materials

5 Acids, Bases, and pH Q: Why is it important for cells to buffer solutions against rapid changes in pH? A: Buffers dissolved in life’s fluids play an important role in maintaining homeostasis in organisms.

6 The pH Scale-meas. Of H+ and OH- ions
More OH- The pH Scale-meas. Of H+ and OH- ions Water is neutral 7 More H+

7 Acids-below 7 Bases-above 7 Buffers-weak A or B that react with strong A/B to prevent sudden changes in pH scale
