Cellular Processes Homeostasis in a Cell
2
Cell Membrane/Transport Web quest - Handout
Moved to next year (Jan. 9, 2017).
3
Membrane Transport Regulating Homeostasis:
pH: measure of acidity within a cell Cells may use buffers to regulate internal balance (pH) Insulin is a protein used to regulate glucose levels Organisms sweat to cool off (overall temperature)
4
Membrane Transport Movement across cell membranes maintains homeostasis What determines how materials move? Cells function in the bodies of living organisms based on the role they need to carry out. Depends on materials needed for cellular processes Depends on the surroundings in which the cell exists
5
Membrane Transport Examining Solutions:
Review: Solute = dissolved substances Solvent = does the dissolving (often water) Example: In salt water, what is the solute? What is the solvent? Example 2: In chocolate milk, what is the solute? What is the solvent?
6
Membrane Transport When identifying a type of solution, we are referring to the environment in which the cell is located This means that we are comparing the solution to the area outside the cell.
7
Membrane Transport Hypotonic solutions: dissolved particle concentration is lower than the cell Concentration of the solute is lower Concentration of water (solvent) is higher “Hypo” means: low, under Ex: hypothermia = low body heat WATER moves inside Cell will swell or burst
8
Membrane Transport Hypertonic solutions: dissolved particle concentration is higher than the cell Concentration of the solute is higher Concentration of water (solvent) is lower “Hyper” means: higher, more Ex: hyperactive = higher activity WATER moves outside Cell will shrivel or shrink
9
Membrane Transport Isotonic solutions: dissolved particle concentration is equal Concentration of the solute is even Concentration of water (solvent) is even “Iso” means: equal or even Ex: isosceles triangle = 2 equal activity WATER moves in and out evenly Cell will remain the same size
11
Grapes Lab - Activity Complete and submit assignment.

Cell Membrane Coloring - Handout
Complete assignment. Raise your hand so that I may check you off Glue in notebook so that the stamp is visible. What you do not finish will be homework for tonight.
