5 The Great Depression and Migrant Workers in California
Following World War I, a recession led to a drop in the market price of farm crops Farmers needed to increase their productivity through mechanization and this required an increase in spending that caused many farmers to become financially overextended. The stock market crash in 1929 only served to exacerbate this economic situation. Many independent farmers lost their farms when banks came to collect on their notes, while tenant farmers were turned out when economic pressure increased. Lennie Small – a large man who is intellectually disabled. He is unusually strong and likes to pet soft things --animal fur, velvet, and other soft things (use your imagination) which could get him into trouble. George Milton – Lennie’s opposite. He is small and quick witted. They travel together and the story revolves around their friendship and their dreams. Main Characters
