Road Map for Success: America During the 1920’s ( ) The decade between WWI and the Great Depression was an extremely crucial period in our nation's development. It was a period of unprecedented economic prosperity, tremendous growth, and eventual economic ruin. The 1920's brought many new changes to the fabric of American society. The advent of prohibition, women's suffrage, and the constant conflict between modern science and conservative traditionalism allowed for a tumultuous decade and paved the way for an economic disaster. Labor relations, resentment towards immigrants, and the constant fear of communism shifted American's focus from the economy to these numerous issues. As a consequence of extravagant spending, failing farms, an unequal distribution of wealth, and failing businesses, the country was plunged into the worst economic disaster in it's short history. You will master the following learning standards: USII.10 Describe how the battle between traditionalism and modernity manifested itself in the major historical trends and events after WWI and throughout the 1920’s. The Boston police strike in 1919. The Red Scare and Sacco and Vanzetti. Racial and ethnic tensions. The Scope’s Trial and the debate over Darwin’s On the Origins of Species. Prohibition.
