3 Project Statement Theresa, a wheelchair user relies on a hydraulic power bath lift to assist her with entering and exiting her bath tub. Theresa has suffered from polio in the past and is gradually losing movement in her extremities as a result. The water-powered lift that she currently utilizes has been requiring frequent repairs due to its age (parts are becoming scarce, expensive and possibly unreliable). Development of a new, affordable and easy-to-use lift mechanism for her bathtub is desired. The final mechanism must be able to both lower, lift and rotate Theresa into and out of her tub in a timely manner, while taking into consideration the strict spatial constraints of her bathroom. An ergonomic and safe design is preferred. Dom

4 Customer Requirements
Keep electronics and water separate Chair must swivel Unit cannot be permanent (can be removed) Similar functionality to current unit Equal or smaller size than current unit Comfortable seat Unit must be sanitary and durable in water Chair can recline Jake

19 System Level Proposal - Chair Spin

20 Feasibility Analysis - Floor Jack Concept
Conducted a simple feasibility analysis to determine the piston diameter based on the floor jack design Analysis only solves for the forces required to move the chair from the down position Proved that this design was feasible More, in-depth analysis is required to find the force to raise the chair at the speed that we desire Alex B. / Jake?

21 Test Plan Test Reason Method Dependent Upon Water Pressure Test
Critical for design to be aware of water pressure available and if it can be altered Visit customer home, test water pressure, attempt to increase if need be with customer permission Customer availability, testing equipment Piston Force Test Pistons are required to generate a significant amount of force Physically attach a piston to a water source to ensure we can achieve needed force Water Pressure Test, Building/buying piston, having similar water source, testing apparatus Electric Actuator Test Investigate if previously purchased actuator and battery are suitable for the new design Test for length extended, speed and force exerted Charged battery, understanding of function (read manual) Recline Testing Customer may not have required core strength Test recline system for strength needed to return to upright position Speak with customer and evaluate if it is feasible for customer to use recline (could include and she could ignore) Jake

22 Risk Assessment Alex K.

23 Project Plan Additional Design Analysis (Mechanics)
Custom Design 1 Materials: Plastic/Aluminum Create Bill of Materials Begin thinking about vendors and ordering parts Alex K.

24 Project Plan (MSD 1) Ambition since this is the project’s second iteration: Have a solid, realistic design ready to go Begin finding vendors and order parts Once parts have arrived, being assembly of our prototype Test functions and incrementally improve design even further Alex K.
