1 The Structure of DNA pages 101-102
D = DEOXYRIBO N = NUCLEIC A = ACID Deoxyribonucleic Acid

2 DNA is the “Thread of Life”
In all of the cells that make up your body information is stored in the form of DNA. This information is the genetic blueprint that contains all of the directions and controls all of the functions of your body.

3 Where Can We find DNA?

4 DNA Replication DNA replication is an important process.
During cell division at interphase the DNA of each parent cell must be replicated so that each daughter cell will have the same exact genetic information.

5 DNA was Discovered Recently
Early 1950’s: scientists discovered that it is the DNA in a cell that carries all of its directions. It was also learned at this time that DNA is passed from PARENT cells to DAUGHTER cells

6 Discovering the STRUCTURE of DNA
Rosalind Franklin used x-ray machines to determine that the molecule was in the shape of a twisted ladder or a double helix

7 Discovering the STRUCTURE of DNA
Two graduate students, James Watson and Francis Crick determined the structure of the base pairs that make up the stairs of twisted ladder.

8 Structure of the DNA molecule
If you think of the molecule as a ladder, then you have two parts: the rails and the rungs (steps).

9 The Rails of the Molecule
Alternating molecules of: Deoxyribose Phosphate

10 The Steps (rungs) of the Molecule
Pairs of molecules called NITROGEN BASES Adenine/Thymine Guanine/Cytosine They are held together by a hydrogen bond. Use the letters A, T, C, and G to represent them

11

12 DNA Replication 1 - The two sides unwind
2 - Molecule separates or unzips 3 – Extra bases from the nucleus pair up with the exposed half. 4 – A always with T C always with G 5 – Two new strands are formed

13 DNA Replication

14 Label Your Own DNA Create a KEY for each component found in the molecule, clearly show which color represents what part.
